Using WinZip
WinZip is a necessary tool when you download files from the Web. Usually, a file will be compressed into a ".zip" file so that it can be stored more efficiently. WinZip is the most popular program that allows you to compress and decompress zipped files.

Download WinZip
1. WinZip is a free program available at this location: Download WinZip.
After downloading the install program, run it by double-clicking it. The install walks you through the steps and settings necessary.

Start WinZip
2. Run WinZip by finding it in the Start menu (Start / Programs / WinZip / WinZip by default). A reminder that you are using an unregistered version of WinZip appears. If you agree with the statement, click the I Agree button to continue using WinZip. The Welcome screen appears (if this screen did not appear, then you are Using WinZip Classic. Select Wizard from the File menu to switch to WinZip Wizard).

WinZip Wizard - Welcome

Click the Next button to continue. The Select Activity screen appears.

Open a Zipped File
3. On this screen you are asked "What do you want to do?" and given three possible answers. Since we are opening a zipped file, choose the first one to Unzip or install from an existing Zip file and click the Next button to continue. The Select Zip File screen appears.

Select Zip File

If you cannot find the zipped file on the list, click the Search button. The WinZip Search dialog box appears.

WinZip Search

4. You can choose one of the first three options to have WinZip find zipped files in specified locations, but it may be easier to choose the fourth option to Let me find it (not automatic). After choosing this option, click OK. Browse for the zipped file, select it and click the Open button. Click Next to continue. The Unzip screen appears.

Unzip

5. To choose a different folder to unzip the file to, click the Select different folder button, find the location you want to unzip to and click OK. Make sure the Overwrite matching files automatically box is unchecked or you may accidentally copy over some information. Click Unzip Now to unzip the file.

Create a Zipped File
6. Sometimes, you may find it helpful to compress a file or group of files before uploading it to your site. For example, you may want to compress a folder of images so that somebody can download them much more easily. From the Select Activity screen choose Create a new Zip file and click the Next button to continue. The Choose Zip Name screen appears.

Choose Zip Name

7. After File name, enter the name for your zipped file. Click the Next button to continue. The Select Files screen appears.

Select Files

8. To add files to the zipped file, click the Add files button, browse to the file you want to add, select it and click OK. To add folders within your zipped file, click the Add folders button, enter a folder name and click OK. Once you are satisfied with the contents of the zipped file, click the Zip Now button to create a .zip file. The file will be located in the default folder shown in step 6.
