Use this
checklist to ensure that you’re protecting your computer, your home
network, and your personal identity.
ü
I use my Internet Provider’s FREE malware suite – “Shaw Secure” or
“Telus Freedom” AV Protection Suite.
Shaw Secure Suite:

Telus Freedom Suite:

ü
Before I make a purchase online, I verify that the site is secured
(https, gold lock & green address bar).
ü
None of my social networking profiles like Facebook, Twitter or MSN, are
publicly displayed.
ü
I don’t open or download attachments in emails from people I don’t know.
I make sure my antivirus software scans all incoming email.
ü
I change my passwords frequently and I avoid obvious passwords. (you can
use a password manager to simplify this task)
ü
I keep my anti-virus software updated.
ü
I set my Web browser security level to high.
ü
I use a high-security, Extended Validation (EV)–enabled Web browser.
(Internet Explorer, Firefox or Google Chrome)
ü
I avoid checking high-risk Web sites, like my bank and investment
account, or buying things online, while connected to a public Wi-Fi
network.
ü
I monitor
my bank, investment, and credit card statements regularly and
would
immediately alert my providers if something seems wrong.
ü
I Use a
spyware scanner regularly. (Windows Defender, AdAware or SpyBot Search &
Destroy or your Internet Safety Suite)
ü
I
regularly use a system cleaner to speed up my computer and clean out all
the junk files. (CCleaner)
ü
My
Security Software checks all incoming email for malware.
ü
I don’t click on pop-ups that I don’t recognize when I’m using a
browser. This keeps the “fake” anti-spyware and anti-virus “programs”
off my computer. These downloads masquerade as real software that WILL
infect my system and possibly steal my personal information.
ü
I never give my personal details like my Social Insurance Number to any
website. I realize my real bank and credit card websites NEVER do this!
ü
I use a security website to double-check if my
software is keeping out the bad guys. (HouseCall at
http://housecall.trendmicro.com)
ü
I make a regular “date” at least once a month with my computer to clean
it out, defrag it, and make it run faster.
ü
I search Google for program information that may tell me if it contains
any malware BEFORE I install it.
